The National Ice Hockey League (NIHL), in conjunction with England Ice Hockey (EIH), confirms the conclusion of the investigation and subsequent appeal relating to player eligibility for the Bristol Pitbulls during the 2025/26 season.
Following a league review, the players in question were reclassified as non-British trained (NBT) in accordance with the NIHL Rules of Competition. The club exercised its right to appeal, which was considered by an independent appeal panel.
The independent appeal panel upheld the league’s decision to reclassify the players under the applicable eligibility criteria.
The panel further determined that the following sanctions were proportionate:
• A six-point deduction
• A £3,000 financial penalty, suspended for 12 months subject to no further breaches
The NIHL and EIH have accepted the findings of the independent appeal panel in full.
As the regular season has concluded, the six-point deduction is upheld and recorded but suspended for 12 months, as it can no longer have any material effect on the competition.
The £3,000 financial penalty is also suspended for 12 months, subject to no repeat breach during that period.
This case has highlighted opportunities to further strengthen league processes. Ahead of the 2026/27 season, the NIHL and EIH will implement:
• Enhanced clarity and guidance on British-trained (BT) eligibility criteria
• Strengthened registration and verification processes
• Improved documentation and communication protocols
• Defined timelines and procedures for appeals
The NIHL and EIH remain committed to ensuring that all competitions are conducted with integrity, consistency and fairness. This outcome reflects the importance of independent review and the consistent application of regulations across all clubs.
We thank all parties for their cooperation throughout this process.
