Once you have completed your E-Learning, certificates must be submitted to Ice Hockey UK. This ensures your records can be updated and your qualifications recognised as part of your licence requirements.

Coaching Regulations

EIH coaching courses are designed to ensure coaches are fully trained in both coaching methodology and the technical elements of ice hockey. Courses are delivered through a combination of e-learning and in-person sessions, with a brief syllabus outlined in the table below.

EIH reserves the right to update course content as required.

This pathway applies to all new coaches and to any coach seeking to progress their certification from July 2025 onwards.

Club Committee, Team Managers, Bench Support & Off-Ice Officials Regulations

  • Minimum requirements are in place to ensure Team Managers, committee members, and off-ice officials are properly trained, hold the appropriate credentials, and understand their safeguarding responsibilities.
  • While ongoing EIH membership is not required outside of events, individuals must hold valid EIH membership to volunteer at any EIH-sanctioned competition.
  • EIH may update requirements during a license period in response to changes in legislation or best practice (e.g. safeguarding, data protection, first aid). Reasonable notice will be provided where possible to support compliance.
  • Requirements are subject to change at any time. A current overview is provided below.

**Managers are welcome to access the bench to provide additional support to players when needed. However, to ensure consistent staffing levels, they are not included in the minimum staffing requirements for operating the bench.

DBS Applications

DBS applications are available through the club’s Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL). Any volunteer or member who requires a DBS check as part of their role should contact the DSL directly, who will provide guidance on the application process, verify the necessary documentation, and support applicants throughout the procedure. The DSL acts as the club’s point of contact for DBS matters and can answer any questions regarding eligibility, requirements, and timelines.

Safeguarding (Refresher Annually)

This online course begins with Safeguarding Essentials, a short module designed to increase awareness of safeguarding, why it’s important, and how to apply it in a sporting context. Completion of this module is mandatory for all coaches. You can only complete this course once it has expired. You have 30 days to complete once expired.

First Aid (Refresher Annually)

Course types accepted: Certificates must come from an awarding body or NGB.

Accepted examples include:

    • FA Introduction to First Aid in Football (online)
    • Emergency First Aid in Rugby Union (online or in person)
    • Training Express Sports First Aid (online)
    • Pro Trainings UK Sports First Aid Level 3 (online)
    • UK Coaching First Introduction to First Aid and Sport & Physical Activite
  • Note: Fully online courses do not make the learner a qualified first aider, but EIH accepts them for basic first aid compliance.
  • Skills covered: Courses must include core elements such as:
    • Assessing an incident
    • Managing an unresponsive casualty
    • Treating minor injuries
    • Basic life saving skills

Allied health professionals are asked to provide a copy of their license and registration number for approval, alongside an up-to-date CPD record. A first aid qualification or equivalent is required.
The following are considered Allied Health Professionals for the purposes of this document.

  • Paramedics with IHCD paramedic course; Paramedic foundation degree or MSc in Paramedical Science, registered with the HCPC who have proof of regular annual training and are currently practising on the road or in a training centre.
  • Nurses registered with NMC currently working in an emergency environment (Emergency department)
  • Therapists with a Graduate qualification in sports therapy or rehabilitation who alsohold registration with SST, STA or BASRAT.
  • Physiotherapists registered with the HCPC
  • Doctors registered with the GMC
