Bristol Huskies Puppies demonstrate bright future for female hockey in the city

On Sunday, Bristol Huskies Puppies won their first-ever game by beating Swindon Top Kittens 5-2 in the WNIHL U16s South division.Goals were scored by Milla Pironi (2), Misha McBean (2) and Poppy Shephard, with Sophie Benson getting the win in goal. This is the Puppies’ first full season after entering the league last summer when the Bristol Ice Hockey Academy returned junior ice hockey to the city at the new Planet Ice Bristol facility. After some close scores in their early games, including a goalless draw against second-placed London and only losing by three goals to runway league leaders Chelmsford, the Puppies players are already being rewarded with appearances for the Bristol Huskies side in the WNIHL1.

Pironi was joined by Bethan Walden and Molly Lehman in the senior team’s 11-0 win over Nottingham Vipers immediately after their U16s game, while Phoebe Harris and Elin Pereira-Morrey have also stepped up this season. In addition, this week Pironi, Pereira-Morrey and Benson were called up to the GB U16s women’s long list, suggesting that Bristol women’s ice hockey already has a strong-looking future.
