Match Report – Ken Taggart Memorial Trophy | NIHL Steel City Showdown

The Billingham Stars complete the quad as they win the Ken Taggart Memorial Cup as they defeat the Slough Jets in overtime.

PERIOD ONE (1-1)

It was an equal start to the game with both teams getting shots on net, but neither of them managed to get the go-ahead goal.

The first goal of the game came through Chris Sykes for Billingham on the powerplay as Jack Goodchild sat 2+2 for high-sticking. The Jets managed to kill the remainder of the penalty to keep it at a one-goal game.

The Stars had a change in netminder as Jacob Hammond went off following an injury. Mark Turnball was quickly thrown into the game as the Jets were awarded a penalty shot, which he denied.

In the final minutes of the period, the Jets found their equaliser through Christian Mohr to go into the middle frame with a tied scoreline.

PERIOD TWO (3-2)

Mark Turnball made a string of great saves at the start of the period to keep the score level for the Stars.

Michael Elder passed the puck to Chris Sykes from behind the net, who made no mistake in finding the back of the net, while shorthanded, to give the Stars a one-goal advantage.

Connor McNulty doubled the Stars’ lead as he pulled the puck around his defender and fired it home.

Inside the final minute of the period, Juha Lindgren skated through the middle of the defence and reduced the Jets’ deficit to one.

PERIOD THREE (4-4)

Oli Hemmings-Maher scored on the powerplay to get the equaliser for the Jets. Assisted by Seb Mohr.

The Jets got their first goal of the game through Brandon Miles. He received a pass across on the 2-on-1 to give the Jets their first lead of the game.

Matty Smital made the initial stop on the line, but Joe Walls got to the puck first and fired it top shelf on the power play, making the score level.

Despite the Jets having a power play, there was no change in score.

OVERTIME (5-4)

It was a back and forth period of overtime, however it was Roland Gritans who put an end to the game as he found the back of the net with an unassisted goal, winning the Ken Taggart Memorial Trophy.
