NIHL preview | February 15-16

This weekend, the first silverware of the season is on the line, with league and NIHL Cup action to look forward to.

The standout fixtures of the weekend see Romford Raiders and Leeds Knights go head-to-head in the NIHL Cup final – the Knights, despite all their league success, looking to win the competition for the first time.

Romford, meanwhile, came from three goals down in their semi-final tie against MK Lightning to progress and cannot be underestimated, despite failing to beat the Knights during the last two seasons.

With the pair occupied by cup matters, Milton Keynes can stretch their lead at the top of the Planet Ice NIHL National Division during Gameweek 23.

Lightning face a mouth-watering double-header against Swindon Wildcats, during a 48-hour window which could have a huge impact on the title hopes of both clubs. Swindon’s Link Centre plays host to the first bout, before the pair travel to Planet Ice MK for a Sunday evening sequel.

Below them, Hull Seahawks will hope to enjoy their second perfect gameweek in a row, with games to come at Solway Sharks on Saturday then back at home against Sheffield Steeldogs the following night.

Sheffield, who also host Berkshire Bees on Saturday, are the only side that could overtake Hull in the standings this weekend.

The sixth-placed Peterborough Phantoms are only in action once during Gameweek 23, away at a Bristol Pitbulls side looking to fend off Berkshire as the pair battle to avoid the wooden spoon.

The Bees currently find themselves four points adrift at the foot of the table but could reduce that gap this weekend, should they enjoy positive results against Sheffield and then Solway on Sunday.

The final side in action this weekend are Telford Tigers, who host Bristol on Sunday evening.

The Tigers will look to hang onto eighth spot in the standings but know that it will be out of their hands, given Solway play twice and are only a point behind.
