NIHL preview | Final Four

The 2024/25 Planet Ice NIHL National Division season comes to an end this weekend, with playoff silverware up for grabs at the Coventry Skydome.

The four qualifying teams from the round-robin group stages – Leeds Knights, Peterborough Phantoms, Swindon Wildcats and MK Lightning – will partake in the semi-finals on Saturday.

The winners will progress to Sunday’s playoff final, on a day which also includes a meeting between the regular season champions of the NIHL 1 North and South – Billingham Stars and Slough Jets – to determine who will win the NIHL 1 Championship.

Of the four qualifying National Division teams, Swindon were the only ones to progress through the group stages with a flawless six wins from six.

Their reward is a meeting with defending playoff champions Peterborough Phantoms, who will need to be at their very best to continue their pursuit of a second successive crown.

The pair met five times during the regular season, with the Wildcats edging the head-to-head 3-2.

The Phantoms’ only two defeats during the group stages came against Leeds Knights, who topped Group A to set up a meeting with MK Lightning in the last four.

It has been a stellar season so far for the Knights, who won the national cup and also topped the league standings – finishing one point above Milton Keynes.

Their search for the treble will see them face a Lightning side hoping to draw inspiration from running Leeds mightily close for the majority of the season.

After a thrilling Saturday double-header, silverware will be won on Sunday afternoon, with the grand final set to start at approximately 4pm.
