Sheffield Steelkings Para Ice Hockey club have partnered with Hallam FM‘s ‘Cash for Kids’ programme, with a view to providing more opportunities for young people in South Yorkshire and Derbyshire to take part in the sport of ice hockey. Cash for Kids are a grant-giving charity helping the children that need it most across Yorkshire, North Derbyshire and Northern Lincolnshire. Their website says: “Our mission is to improve the lives of disadvantaged children and young people in our communities who are affected by poverty, illness, neglect or have additional needs. We believe that all children should be able to express their individuality, achieve their potential and live life to the full. “We work with local grassroots organisations that aim to make a difference to young lives, directly supporting families who often have nowhere else to go.” Like the EIHA, the Sheffield Steelkings firmly believe in the unifying power of sport, and that everyone, regardless of background or circumstance should have the opportunities to participate in exercise. To that end, their popular ‘Learn to Sledge’ sessions will return on Friday 13 October. The club will be opening their ice to look for the next generation of para ice hockey players.
The Steelkings want your help to find 14-18-year-olds who would love the sport and would be interested in taking part in this free learn to sledge session.sheffieldsteelkings@gmail.com
They will also be looking to raise money to allow the club to start to build an official junior programme in Sheffield. Kids are the future of any sport, and the money raised will be vital in helping to create a dedicated space for young people to get on the ice, learn new skills and join the Steelkings family in the future. If you know someone in the Sheffield area with a lower-body disability or impairment, (especially those between 14-18 years of age), or you think para ice hockey is a sport you would like to play, email:The club have set up a dedicated ‘Cash for Kids’ fundraising page, which you can donate to via this link.
To support the fundraising, the Steelkings are also bringing back their Halloween inter-squad exhibition game on Saturday 7 October. The game will be held at IceSheffield at 8:15pm and admission is free for everyone.
The money raised at this game (from merchandise, raffles etc) will be vital in helping to create a dedicated space for young people to get on the ice, learn new skills and join the Steelkings family in the future.
