Match Report – Laidler Playoff Grand Final | NIHL Steel City Showdown

The Tigers complete the treble as they win the first trophy of the Steel City Showdown.

In a much-awaited rematch between the Sutton Sting and the Telford Tigers, it’s the Tigers who come on top again to win the final trophy of the season.

PERIOD ONE (2-1)

The Tigers got the start they wanted for the final, controlling the puck from the face-off.

The first goal of the weekend came from a shot on the point from Daniel Harrison, assisted by Oliver Hunt.

Following a shift in the momentum from the power play, Ryan Apsley scored the equaliser for the Sting, assisted by Callum Russell.

Less than 20 seconds later, the Tigers answered back to put them back in the lead through Vladimir Luka, assisted by Oliver Hunt.

The Sting looked to get the equaliser in the final minutes of the period, but the Tigers held onto their one-goal lead going into the middle frame.

PERIOD TWO (4-1)

The Tigers start the period on the right foot as Taylor Stanton doubled their lead early in the second period, assisted by number 40, Benjamin Washburn.

Stanton got his second of the game in quick succession as he managed to add another to the Tigers lead, assisted by Daniel Harrison.

The Sting looked to reduce the deficit, but Matthew Bryne made some crucial saves to keep the gap at three. They were awarded a power play as the period came to a close, however, they were unable to capitalise.

PERIOD THREE (6-3)

The Sting came out strong to start the final period with their second goal coming from Charlie Saunders, assisted by Ryan Apsley, to reduce the Tigers lead to two.

The momentum was short-lived as Luka regained the Tigers three-goal lead, keeping their treble hopes in sight.

As Liam Bartholomew sat for two minutes for kneeing, Adam Brooke-Smith slotted the puck past Bryne on the power play to make the score 5-3.

Vladimir Luka scored his hat-trick goal with just over two minutes left of the period to reinstate the three-goal lead.

As the final minutes ticked down on the clock, the Sting gave it their all however it was the Tigers who took home the final trophy of the season.
