Billingham Stars’ Iain Brown enjoys record-breaking weekend

Billingham Stars’ Iain Brown has set a new season record for goals scored in the NIHL 1 North.

The previous record of 65 had stood since the 2018/19 season and was held by former GB international Jason Hewitt, icing for the then-Hull Pirates.

Brown, in his second season at the Stars, came into the weekend on 61 goals and scored a brace in Deeside on Saturday night, taking him to 63.

During Sunday’s home game with Deeside Dragons, he netted his 64th on 14.50 with a back-post finish, then in the second period equalled the record with a powerplay strike, ‘volleying’ in a rebound.

The record came a couple of minutes later as Brown was sent through one-on-one with Dragons goalie Matt Croyle.

The 24-year-old Canadian made no mistake, scoring five-hole for the 66th goal of a remarkable season. It was also his 10th hat-trick of the campaign.

He added a fourth on the night, goal 67 of the league season, in the 35th minute which also took him over 100 points in the league.

Brown’s linemate Chris Sykes also passed 100 points during Sunday’s game, picking up 1+6 on the night as the Stars ran out 14-5 winners.

They round off their league campaign on Saturday with a local derby against Whitley Warriors, after which they will be presented with the NIHL 1 North league championship trophy.
