NIHL round-up | 12-14 January

Leeds Knights have moved three points clear at the top of the Planet Ice NIHL National Division, despite encountering two tricky fixtures over the weekend.

The Knights began the weekend with a 4-3 shootout loss at Solway Sharks on Friday but returned to winning ways two days later with a hard-fought 7-5 win against the division’s basement side, Bristol Pitbulls.

Friday’s slip-up meant MK Lightning would have the chance to finish the weekend within one point of the leaders.

However, they could not back up Saturday’s 6-3 victory at home to Telford Tigers and make it a four-point weekend as Hull Seahawks ran out 6-4 winners at Hull Ice Arena – ensuring it would be they who went 2/2 over the weekend, after a 6-5 win at Raiders IHC the previous day.

Home comforts proved to be the order of the weekend for Swindon Wildcats, who defeated Bees IHC and Peterborough Phantoms over the weekend and scored nine goals in both games.

The Phantoms had hoped to leapfrog the Wildcats in the standings but now lie five points adrift of their rivals, despite a resounding 7-1 win at Sheffield Steeldogs on Saturday night.

Elsewhere, a 5-3 triumph over Raiders IHC on Sunday evening saw Bees IHC move further clear of the bottom two in the division. They are now just one point behind the Romford-based outfit in the league standings, having played one game fewer.
