Match Report – Ken Taggart Memorial Bowl | NIHL Steel City Showdown

The Peterborough Phantoms become National Division Two Champions in a 17-goal final.

Both teams had a good start to the weekend, winning their division’s game with a healthy lead, giving them one of the two trophies available.

However, it was the Phantoms who came out on top this afternoon to win the Ken Taggart Memorial Bowl.

PERIOD ONE (2-4)

It only took 22 seconds for the Phantoms to kickstart their scoring as James White found the back of the net, assisted by Conor Pollard.

The Phantoms doubled their lead as Conor Pollard took the puck around Matthew Bryne and slid it over the line.

Leo Markey scored the third Phantom goal. Bryne made the initial save, but the puck trickled across the line to make it 3-0.

Conor Pollard got his second of the night as he moved around his defender to add to their lead, leaving the Tigers to call a timeout to try and regroup.

It proved to be effective as Paul Davies passed the puck to the front of the net to Vladimir Luka to get the Tigers on the board.

They then quickly applied the pressure again and scored a delayed penalty goal on a 2-on-1. Paul Davies passed the puck across to Taylor Stanton, who made no mistake in finding the back of the net.

PERIOD TWO (6-8)

The Tigers kept applying pressure, and it paid off as Luka got his second of the game reducing the deficit to one.

AJ Herring fired it far side less than a minute later, reinstating the Phantoms’ two-goal lead.

The Phantoms found their three-goal lead again as Jack Sansby scored just moments after a successful 5-on-3 penalty kill.

However, the Tigers answered straight back with a goal of their own. It was a hat-trick goal for Vladimir Luka, his second hat-trick of the weekend.

Just 39 seconds later, James White got his second of the game, scoring the Phantoms 7th goal, assisted by Nathan Pollard.

Luka got his fourth of the game by firing it into the top right corner as they came off the penalty kill to make it 5-7.

James White scored his hat-trick goal on a breakaway, putting the puck top shelf.

With 16 seconds left on the clock, Taylor Stanton scored a power-play goal. Luke Clark found himself out of place and was unable to make the save as the puck went into the top right corner again.

PERIOD THREE (8-9)

Telford kept applying the pressure in the final period, and they were rewarded with a power play goal scored by Taylor Stanton to reduce the deficit to one goal.

However, the one-goal deficit was short-lived as Leo Markey shot from the blue line and got the puck over the line.

The Tigers were rewarded with a power play to end the period. Davies capitalised, leaving them with a minute to find the equaliser.

Despite the pressure the Tigers applied, the Peterborough Phantoms held onto their one-goal lead and won the Ken Taggart Memorial Bowl.
