Bristol ice hockey community delivers record-breaking support as Puppies and Huskies pack out rink

Bristol’s rapidly growing women’s ice hockey movement enjoyed a landmark evening last weekend as two showcase fixtures at Planet Ice Patchway drew some of the largest crowds in the club’s history.

The event highlighted the strength of Bristol’s grassroots-to-elite pathway and the city’s rising reputation as a hub for women’s sport.

Puppies open the night to a 150+ strong crowd

The evening began with the Bristol Huskies Puppies (U16 Girls) taking on Swindon Top Kittens in front of more than 150 supporters.

Families, young athletes and club members filled the stands to cheer on the next generation of female hockey players, creating an atmosphere full of energy, pride and community spirit.

Community skate brings families on to the ice

Between the two fixtures, the rink opened for a special ‘Skate with the Players’ session.

Dozens of young fans, new families and potential players took to the ice alongside their Bristol Puppies and Bristol Huskies heroes. Players posed for photos, signed autographs, and helped first-time skaters take their earliest strides in the sport.

Parents described the session as a rare and inspiring opportunity for girls to meet role models up close, while club coaches noted the excitement among newcomers who were experiencing hockey for the first time.

Adding to the buzz, members of the England Women’s U20 international rugby team were in attendance, showing their support for women’s sport in Bristol and joining the crowd in celebrating the athletes on the ice.

Their presence underscored the growing cross-sport solidarity for female athletes in the region.

Huskies draw nearly 500 for Elite League clash

The night concluded with Bristol Huskies’ WNIHL Elite team facing Solihull Vixens in front of a remarkable audience just shy of 500.

The near-capacity crowd marked one of the largest turnouts ever for women’s hockey in the city, and reflected the momentum building around the Huskies’ elite programme.

The atmosphere was electric from puck drop to final whistle, with fans of all ages rallying behind the team and showcasing the passion that is rapidly becoming a hallmark of Bristol’s hockey community.

A growing force in women’s sport

“These attendance numbers show something special is happening in Bristol,” said Becci Osman, the club’s owner and head coach.

“From our youngest players to our elite women, the community is rallying behind the sport in a way that inspires everyone involved. It’s a huge boost for the athletes and a sign of the momentum we’re building.”

With more fixtures, community events and development opportunities planned throughout the year, Bristol Huskies continue to strengthen their mission: to build an inclusive, exciting and sustainable future for women’s ice hockey in the south-west.

Next up is their celebration of International Women’s Day at the Bristol Huskies vs Queen Bees fixture on March 8 (7pm face-off). Entry is free, with tickets available here.
