MK Lightning raising awareness of period poverty on International Women’s Day

This Saturday, MK Lightning will proudly celebrate International Women’s Day with a special collaboration alongside Milton Keynes Falcons Women’s Ice Hockey Club and local charity Girl Pack.

This exciting partnership aims to highlight the importance of inclusivity in sport and raise awareness of period poverty in the Milton Keynes community.

The Milton Keynes Falcons Women’s Ice Hockey Club has been a pillar of women’s hockey in the region since its formation in 2000.

With 35 players aged 14 and over, the Falcons provide opportunities for athletes of all levels through their WNIHL1 (Women’s National Ice Hockey League 1) squad – the second highest league in the UK – as well as their development team, which competes in the Frank Wright Conference.

This season marks a milestone for the Falcons as they celebrate 25 years with limited-edition anniversary jerseys. Additionally, younger players now have a place to develop their skills with the reformation of the U16s Storm girls’ team, welcoming players aged 10-16.

At Saturday’s MKL game vs Peterborough Phantoms, Falcons players will be at Planet Ice Milton Keynes handing out match night leaflets to encourage more women and girls to get involved in the sport.

MK Lightning are also excited to be welcoming Girl Pack, a UK-registered, volunteer-led charity that provides free emergency period packs to young people and those in need.

Girl Pack’s work ensures sanitary care products are accessible in schools, community centres, and local government offices throughout Milton Keynes. Each pack contains sanitary towels, feminine wipes, knickers and hand sanitiser to help alleviate financial pressure on families and support those experiencing period poverty.

Fans attending Saturday’s game will have the opportunity to contribute by donating essential hygiene products at Girl Pack’s ‘Donation Station’, located outside the rink entrance.
