UK-based SPICE Jets take part in major international tournament

Two teams from the UK-based SPICE Jets have taken part in this year’s Special Hockey Tournament in Toronto, Canada, hosted by the GrandRavines Hockey Club.

The SPICE Jets are a special educational needs (SEN) ice hockey team based at the Slough Ice Arena.

They are part of SPICE (Special People on Ice), a volunteer-led organization established to teach skating to children and young adults with additional needs.

The annual SHI tournament brings together teams from across North America and Europe once a year for a major gathering, attracting more than 70 teams.

Ricci Hodgson, chair of SPICE, said: “For many of our skaters, this has been the first time they have had the opportunity to play in an international tournament, and it’s fantastic to see how they have risen to the occasion.

“These trips give our players truly life-changing experiences, with an opening ceremony and closing banquet and two days of scheduled games against both Canadian and American teams.

“Friendships are made that will last a lifetime.”
