Introduction

England Ice Hockey proudly serves as the National Governing Body for ice hockey in England and Wales — a sport with deep roots in our nations and a legacy that dates back to the early 20th century. In fact, Britain helped shape the global game as a founding member of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) in 1908.

Today, England Ice Hockey is at the heart of the sport’s growth and development — from energising grassroots participation to nurturing elite talent through the England pathway and feeding future medallists into Team GB. With a thriving community of over 450 clubs and 10,000 registered players, coaches, and officials, the sport continues to go from strength to strength.

Our reach extends far beyond the ice. Through dynamic programmes and meaningful community engagement, we’re making a real impact across the country. We’re also leading the way in coach and official development, while upholding the highest standards in safeguarding, welfare, and compliance — ensuring the sport remains a safe, inclusive, and inspiring space for everyone involved.

General Manager, National Ice Hockey League

The General Manager (Volunteer) for the National Ice Hockey League (NIHL) will help oversee the delivery and coordination of league operations across England and affiliated regions. Working closely with the NIHL Management Committee and other volunteers, the role supports consistency, fairness, and structure within the senior men’s league environment.

This voluntary position is ideal for someone with a strong understanding of the sport and a commitment to supporting the domestic game. The role is focused on coordination and facilitation, not full-time operational leadership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the scheduling and smooth running of league fixtures, playoffs, and key calendar events.
  • Help apply and interpret league rules and regulations, referring serious matters to the Management Committee.
  • Assist with general queries and communications between clubs, officials, and volunteers.
  • Act as a point of contact for league-related questions from team managers, administrators, and club representatives.
  • Coordinate with other General Managers (e.g., Junior, WNIHL’s) and volunteers to ensure alignment across levels where possible.
  • Provide input into improvements to league structures or operations where appropriate.
  • Attend planning meetings, forums, and disciplinary hearings as needed in a representative capacity.
  • Ensure that league decisions and processes adhere to national rules, safeguarding requirements, and good governance practices.
  • Help maintain records of decisions, communications, and operational actions in coordination with the administrative team.
  • Working alongside the Assistant GM to promote the sport in a fair and transparent way, including National Final Events.

While this is a volunteer role, we’re looking for individuals who can bring:

  • Experience working in or with league or team operations (ice hockey preferred).
  • Strong communication and coordination skills, with the ability to engage constructively with a range of stakeholders.
  • A practical, hands-on approach and willingness to be part of a wider team effort to support the league.
  • A commitment to fairness, inclusivity, and the values of the sport.

Application

To apply, please complete our volunteer application form, and include the role title at the top of this document in the name of the vacancy. The closing date for this role is: 20th July 2025. Interviews are expected to be held via video call the week commencing Monday 21st July 2025.
